cultural pilgrim

OMG, he's fucking hot. I soooo want him to 'enlighten' me. Mmph!

Just got home from docent training class & presentations. Crunch time! I have exactly two weeks left til our final script is due but still need to do five short papers, turn those in, and all eleven papers will be consolidated and edited to form the script (each tour is one hour long).

I had fun today doing the last of my four presentations. This one was on a 15th century Tibetan carved wood sculpture depicting a Boddhisattva and his consort in a spiritual and sexual union. It's a potentially controversial piece to show the school kids 'cause their parents may get upset (you know these neurotic soccer moms) but I managed to circumnavigate that part and instead focused almost entirely on the symbolisms as per Buddhism. Turns out that docents quickly avoid this piece but I chose it precisely for the challenge. And the veterans told me I got it spot on.

My mentor and some of the other veteran docents think I'm a very strong contender for engaging the little brats, that I have an inviting and friendly speaking voice (probably 'cause I sound like Peter Brady in that one episode where he's going through puberty and it's screwing around with his voice), and that I'll work beautifully with the kids. I'm glad, I actually have great fun doing the presentations but am also mindful to keep the focus on communicating the essential concepts and details behind each piece and to preserve the basic levels so that the kids can absorb them to make an impression.

Docent training is very demanding, even for someone like me who has a degree in art and a background in art history and culture. We provisionals began the program last September, and since then several have dropped out. The research work alone can take hours each week, before we even begin to write our weekly papers (11-12 in all), and make physical trips to the museum for more research. Then we choose several of these for a 3 minute oral exposition during which we must convey the essences of each piece to the school kids and actively trying to involve them to discover the objects. I am practically back in school!

I should qualify to be a fully fledged docent in June, earn my badge then.

I finally visited the yoga school and inquired about classes. Will actually sign up for them later this week or next, right on the day of the first class. The school is on the other side of the block where I live. Soon this space alien will be a walking pretzel.
