life spherically

You've seen Under The Tuscan Sun, haven't you? Diane Lane stars in it, and it's one of my favourite movies ever. There's an evening scene near a fountain with another memorable character, an eccentric, romantic, aging beauty named Catherine who, in the story, was a former lover of Frederico Fellini. While eating an ice cream cone, Catherine says to recently jilted, divorced, and thus bereft Frances (played by Lane), "You must live your life spherically, in many directions."

I know that I must surround myself with people. Not necessarily for attention and certainly not to be the center of it. I need people to inspire me, to help me stay focused on where I am in the world, because I already know where I am in my world. I noticed that when I'm alone I think, and think deeply, yet I tend to stand still. But when I'm with people, I do, I act, interact, trigger things outward and inward. There are definitely ways to meld the two together, like alchemy.

It may seem as if I'm dependent on others or worse, needy. But it isn't that at all. It's connection, really. Connectedness. Hold hands, because that's the way the silver electricity of our souls can run as a current that powers the world and makes it twirl.
