Manila Bay
Nanay finally returned from her two week trip to Manila with M, my oldest brother. They needed to go there to settle some estate concerns regarding my late dad.
The first thing Nanay commented on when I asked her was the how brutally hot and muggy it was. I'm no stranger to that. When I went back for our family reunion six years ago it was the among the first things I noticed. No sooner had I stepped outside in the native air when beads of sweat formed on my forehead and I felt the heaviness of the moist atmosphere on my body. And that was at night. During the day, even though cloudy, it was near unbearable if you weren't acclimated. In such a third world country air conditioning is a luxury and is rarely affordable to many people.
Nanay and M brought back lots of treats to divvy up among relatives here. Filipino sweets are among the best there are, primarily because they're not stupidly laden with way too much sugar, like American candies.
Soon after M and D (my second oldest brother who lives five minutes away from us and who picked up Nanay and M from the airport) left, Nanay crashed from exhaustion from her flight back (I think it's an average of 18-20 hours from L.A. to Manila, with a layover in South Korea). Bless her.

Lola must have passed out when she got home. I would have thought she would have been used to the hot, muggy weather coming back from the Manila!
